THE PROBLEM
The FCC website contains a lot of information for different users. It can become a clutter of text and a mess for users to navigate.
THE SOLUTION
Our solution to this problem is to clean the navigation and UI on the FCC website to make it easier for users to find what they are looking for, resulting in a simplified experience.
CREATIVE PROCESS
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Our research was focused on the creation of a single proto-persona to represent the consumer user target audience for the website, then we developed specific tasks and conducted a series of user tests to help us analyze the usability/navigation of the site.
PROTO-PERSONA
USER PATH
Charlotte lost her job during the pandemic and she needs internet access at home to look for a new job.
Heuristic Analysis
Some of our key findings included confusing navigation, featured content is lost in the clutter, and poor aesthetics.
Card Sorting
With analysis and user initial user testing data, we embarked into the task of organizing new navigation of the FCC website.
Site Map
Some of our key findings included confusing navigation, featured content is lost in the clutter, and poor aesthetics.
Wireframes
With navigation sitemap defined, the team began building out digital wireframes in Figma.
Mood Board
While the team continued to iterate on the wireframes for desktop and mobile, I took on the task of developing a mood board to guide the UI aesthetics.
UI Style Guide
As wireframes were taking shape, I took on the task of building out a UI Style Guide which would ultimately guide the redesign of the site.
Desktop Prototype
Pulling assets from the Style Guide, the team began creating and iterating on both the desktop and mobile prototypes in Figma.
Usability Testing
Once we felt confident in the prototype's navigation and usability, we re-engaged with users for testing. Upon completion, we took the feedback and made some final (minor) iterations. That said, our testing did result in a 100% success rate for all of the tasks we asked user to accomplish!
The Takeaway
As design lead on this project, it was a challenge to tackle the daunting task of redesigning a massive government website in a two week span! The greatest reward of this project was to guide a very good team of young designers, and ultimately achieve our goal of making a simplified experience for our users to navigate.
